ABOUT ANGUILLAColorful Anguilla (pronounced Ang-Gwil-Ah), part of the British West Indies, is an upscale splash in the East Caribbean. Anguilla is approximately 16 miles long by 3 miles wide at its widest point, together with a number of much smaller islands and cays with no permanent population. Showing both its British and African influences, Anguilla puts on a plethora of festivals and celebrations.
This exclusive spot is an English-speaking paradise with crystal clear waters, white sand beaches and chic hotels. Visitors can travel Anguilla's sometimes perilous roads by rental car, scooter or taxi. Don't miss popular Shoal Bay, the restaurants in Sandy Ground or lovely Rendezvous Bay.
The island's capital is The Valley. Anguilla is noted for its spectacular and ecologically important coral reefs. Apart from the main island of Anguilla itself, the territory includes a number of other smaller islands and cays, mostly tiny and uninhabited. Some of these are Anguillita, Dog Island, Prickley Pear, Scrub Island, Seal Island, Scilly Cay, Sombrero, and Sandy Island.
Anguilla has a tropical though rather dry climate, moderated by northeast trade winds. Temperatures vary little throughout the year. Average daily maxima range from about 80 degrees fahrenheit in December to 86 degrees fahrenheit in July. Rainfall is erratic, averaging about 90 cm (35 in) per year, the wettest months being September and October, and the driest February and March. Anguilla is vulnerable to hurricanes from June to November, peak season August to mid-October. |
